Compensation in the event of cancellations or delays caused by a pilot strike

According to European Regulation CE No. 261/2004, when it concerns an internal strike at the airline, which causes inconvenience to flights, including delay, cancellation or refusal of boarding, etc., we consider that this could have been avoided, and that it is not considered an extraordinary circumstance.

Compensation is then provided to passengers who are victims of a pilot strike, the value of which can go up to €600, in addition to alternative transport, and various services, waiting time at the airport.

 

The amount of compensation :

In the event of a pilot strike, the European Regulation provides for compensation to passengers, the amount of which differs depending on the distance of the flight:

  • If the flight distance is less than 1500 km, the compensation is €250 for a delayed, canceled or overbooked flight.
  • If the flight distance is between 1500 km and 3500 km, the compensation is €400 for a delayed, canceled or overbooked flight.
  • If the flight distance is greater than 3,500 km, the compensation is €600 for a delay, cancellation or overbooking.

 

Support in the event of a pilot strike :

In the event of a pilot strike, the carrier must provide, in addition to financial compensation, passenger support. This depends on the waiting time at the airport:

  • Flight up to 1500 km (with a delay of 2 hours or more) : Meals and drinks must be paid for to passengers, as well as the possibility of making 2 phone calls or sending 2 emails.
  • Flight between 1500 km and 3500 km and intra-community flights of more than 1500 km (with a delay of 3 hours or more): Meals and drinks must be paid for to passengers, as well as the possibility of making 2 telephone calls or sending 2 emails .
  • Flight of more than 3500 km (with a delay of 4 hours or more) : Meals and drinks must be paid for to passengers, as well as the possibility of making 2 phone calls or sending 2 emails.
  • Flights delayed 5 hours or more : passengers have the right to cancel their reservations and obtain a refund of their tickets.
  • Flights postponed to the next day : the airline must provide accommodation for passengers, with round-trip transportation from the airport to the hotel.

 

The claim for compensation :

In the event of a pilot strike, according to European Regulation 261/2004, passengers are entitled to financial compensation, the amount of which can be up to 600 euros, for flights delayed by more than 3 hours, a flight cancellation, or for denied boarding.
